Ride-Along Program
The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Department has a Ride-Along Program that gives civilians the opportunity to observe law enforcement patrol activities. The goal is to help riders understand the problems and concerns of law enforcement while establishing lines of communications between law enforcement officers and the community.
Application
Interested candidates must apply to participate in the Ride-Along Program. Candidates must submit a Letter of Request to the Sheriff. The letter should include the reasons for the request as well as a date and time that the candidate would like to participate. The Sheriff or a Shift Commander will consider the request for approval. Assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis.
Liability Waiver Form
The candidate must complete a Liability Waiver Form in addition to your Letter of Request. The waiver must include the candidate’s full name, address and date of birth. The candidate must sign the waiver. Candidates under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign the waiver as well. Candidates under the age of 14 will not be allowed to ride unless the Sheriff grants special permission.
Approval
Upon receipt of the Letter of Request and the completed Liability Waiver Form, the request will be considered for approval. The Sheriff or a Shift Commander will notify candidates receiving approval. Early application is suggested since the Department prefers to schedule the ride at least a week in advance.
Participation
Participants will be under the direction of a patrol officer. Participants will not be allowed to become involved in the patrol officer’s activities unless specifically directed to do so by the patrol officer. If the patrol officer or the participant decides that a dangerous situation exists which would compromise the participant’s safety, the ride will terminate and the participant will be dropped off at a place of safety. Arrangements will be made for the participant’s transportation back to the Sheriff’s Department if the ride is terminated.
