Program example:
The Village of Belgium requested assistance in preparing an update of their Ten-Year Master Plan. The Extension office helped an appointed citizen committee in reviewing the existing plan; conducted a trend analysis; obtained resident input; helped to identify goals and objectives; and guided the committee members in drafting a new land use map.

Currently, Extension is working with the Ozaukee County Economic Development Corporation to promote, assist, encourage, develop and advance the business, prosperity and economy of Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.

The Center for Community Economic Development is a multi-disciplinary unit of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. The central goal of the Center is helping people understand the changes affecting Wisconsin communities from the most rural to the most urban.
Wisconsin Small Business Development Center
The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) exists to serve the people of the State of Wisconsin through business education counseling, technology and information transfer, and instruction. The SBDC is a unique partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Extension and the business schools and departments of the UW System.
The Learning Institute for Nonprofit Organizations is a unique collaboration among Murphy Communications, Inc., the Society for Nonprofit Organizations, and the University of Wisconsin-Extension. It was formed to provide cutting-edge learning opportunities for nonprofit organizations across the state and the country.

The mission of the Wisconsin Department of Commerce is to lead Wisconsin citizens, businesses, and communities toward a safe and prosperous future as competitors in the global economy.

Local government officials in Wisconsin face a wide range of challenges as they respond to the changing needs of their communities. The Wisconsin Department of Administration has compiled the Wisconsin Catalog of Community Assistance which lists scores of state aids and technical services offered by various state agencies.

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development website provides past and present labor market information as well as JobNet, which allows job seekers the opportunity to view available job openings and employers to post new job openings.

The Ozaukee County Economic Development Corporation provides information about area municipal industrial parks and local contacts on the Regional Economic Partnership web site.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Association is an organization that fosters economic development in the State of Wisconsin by providing leadership in defining and advocating economic development initiatives and by striving to develop the professional practice of economic development.

Demographic Information

Program example:
Periodically, the media or developers/realtors request information from the Extension Office about either the county or a specific community. Requested information usually includes current or projected population, incomes, household sizes, areas of growth, or labor market data.

Currently, Extension is working on compiling data from the U.S. Census 2000.  As more information becomes available, it will be added to this site.  Demographic data on Ozaukee County.

WISPOP is an interactive information retrieval system that contains 1000s of demographic and economic variables for the State of Wisconsin, Ozaukee County, and all fourteen of its municipalities.


The Wisconsin Department of Administration's (DOA) Demographic Services provides a database of Wisconsin county and municipal population profiles. In addition, DOA's Intergovernmental Relations site also provides information on county and municipal population estimates and projections.

The U.S. Census home page contains numerous sites and tiger maps relating to data collected during the 1990 census.

Land Use and Growth Management

The Extension office is currently facilitating a process for Ozaukee County to comply with Wisconsin's Comprehensive Planning Legislation. Extension has created and maintains a Comprehensive Planning website that provides educational materials to County Board members, local government officials and citizens.

The Local Government Center is a multi-disciplinary unit of the University of Wisconsin-Extension supported by the Wisconsin Counties Association, the Wisconsin Towns Association, and the Wisconsin League of Municipalities. The Center offers training workshops, educational teleconference network (ETN) programs, publications, and fact sheets in the areas of community planning & design, growth management, local government official education, disaster management & recovery, barn preservation, and downtown business improvement programs.

The national organization representing professional planners is the American Planning Association (APA). This website contains books and reports online, a publications database, a subscription answer service for planners, recent legislative and policy decisions, general public information for practitioners, media, and citizen.
A statewide organization working to fight urban sprawl and promote effective land use reform in Wisconsin is the 1000 Friends of Wisconsin. The website contains information about the organizations programs, upcoming events, and now citizens are working together to promote sound land use decisions and policies in Wisconsin.

A newsletter for local officials that discusses rules, regulations, and new concepts for land and natural resource use is the Law of the Land Review.

Local Government Education

Program Example:
Local officials often request assistance of the Extension Office in helping their boards and committees understand their specific roles and responsibilities or how to conduct meetings using parliamentary procedure.

Currently, Extension is working to help facilitate communication between each unit of local government, including towns, villages, cities, and the county, in order to reach community goals and provide services in the most effective and efficient manner for the lowest possible cost. This is accomplished through the Local Government Information Network (LoGIN), which meets quarterly to discus common issues and concerns.

Another similar organization with a national focus is the National Association of County Officials.


A statewide organization promoting the interests of towns and town government is the Wisconsin Towns Association.

Natural Resources and Environment

Program Example:
Depending upon demand, the Extension Office has conducted drinking water testing at the county fair and has made available drinking water testing kits at the office. Most often, the indicator nitrate is tested for.

The Environmental Resources Center is comprised of University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension staff who apply their research and teaching to the natural resource management needs of Wisconsin. The Center provides staff support and informational materials to facilitate county and community efforts to develop sound environmental management strategies.

The state agency responsible for natural resources and environmental protection is the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Information is available on matters and issues relating to air and water quality, solid and hazardous waste, leaking underground storage tanks, recycling, forestry, wildlife and fish management, and land/property acquisition.

Recreation and Tourism Developmentlighthouse.gif (11307 bytes)

Program Example:
In conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, the Extension Office has conducted tourism assessments for both the City of Port Washington and Ozaukee County. These assessments help businesses and the community to better understand the benefits of tourism as well as the strengths and weaknesses of their current tourism efforts.

Currently, Extension is working with the Ozaukee Interurban Trail Advisory Council to help develop a recreational trail through the County. When finished, the Interurban Trail will stretch from Milwaukee County in the south to Sheboygan County in the north. Extension intends to facilitate intergovernmental cooperation along the trail and assist in developing trailside facilities.

Promoting tourism venues and businesses within the county is the Ozaukee County Tourism Council, Inc. This nonprofit countywide organization produces an annual Visitor Guide around the theme of "gathering the family and spending a day or longer enjoying the countryside, lakeside, and historic places in Ozaukee County."

At the state level, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism is responsible for promoting tourism. This website contains information on state assistance programs and links to lodging and camping, and state parks.

Solid Waste and Recycling

Program Example:
Currently, Extension is operating two programs to assist Ozaukee County in Solid Waste and Recycling.  The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program and Used Tire Collection Program have been developed to improve our environment for future generations. 

Since 1993, Ozaukee County has maintained a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program. The site is open to county residents on a year-round basis on Mondays and the first Saturday of the month.

The University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension's Solid and Hazardous Waste Education Center is staffed with specialists who provide timely educational programs, publications, and services to citizens, businesses, and communities. Monthly newsletters, monthly recycling market prices, fact sheets, and periodic ETN and satellite programs are produced.

The state agency responsible for solid and hazardous waste programs is the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
