John Grundke, the son-in-law of Cedarburg founder William Schroeder, built this Washington Avenue landmark as a residence for his family. It was later used as office space for local telephone company operators and other businesses. Since its acquisition by the Cedarburg Mutual Insurance Company, the building has undergone substantial renovation and expansion which has doubled its original size.
