Adult Protection Services are for vulnerable adults who may be suffering from physical or financial abuse or may have become so confused that they need help in making medical or other decisions affecting their welfare. The State of Wisconsin enacted an Elder Abuse Law in 1984 to establish a voluntary reporting system and develop a helping network to respond to the victim's needs. Identities of those reporting are kept confidential.

The Bureau of Aging & LTC Resources is the state agency mandated to administer aging programs in Wisconsin under various Titles of the Older Americans Act. The bureau's mission is to "promote and assist in development of effective and efficient health and social service programs for the elderly to live as independently, comfortably, and in as dignified a manner as possible." The bureau also develops policy and implements programs for persons who have a physical disability and persons in need of long term support.

The Aging Resource Center provides information and assistance to persons age 60+ and their families, does in-home assessments, makes referrals to appropriate programs, and provides funding for eligible persons for adult day care, respite, homemaking, and emergency alert systems. Other department services for persons age 0+ include counseling for legal issues and financial benefits, counseling on long-term care options, nutrition programs, and transportation.

Government agency that helps other Federal agencies develop and distribute consumer information to the public. The Consumer Information Catalog lists more than 200 free or low cost booklets on topics such as health, federal benefits, money management, food and nutrition, consumer protection and more. Publications can be viewed, printed or downloaded at their web site. Also publishes the Consumer Action Handbook, a 148-page guide designed to help citizens with consumer problems and questions. Offers tips on topics such as protecting your privacy, buying and leasing a car and a host of other topics.

Also includes a sample complaint form that you can use as a guide for your own letter, fax or e-mail. The handbook offers names, addresses, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses for Better Business Bureaus, corporate consumer contacts, and state, county and city government consumer protection offices.
