School-Based Services

Screening Services: Hearing, Vision, Scoliosis

Annual screening programs are conducted during the school year. These include hearing, vision

and scoliosis. Rechecks are done when initial screenings indicate a possible problem.

A public health nurse follows up on abnormal screening results with parents. When indicated,

referrals are then made to physicians and/or other health care specialists.

Other services: Public Health Nurses may conduct:

Health Services:

  • Participate in review and update of the health services and emergency care procedures

    along with school designee(s) and medical advisor.

  • Act as consultant on development of policies and procedures related to health concerns

    to the school population.

Head lice:

  • Train Volunteers and school staff for "head lice checks".
  • Consult with parents and staff who have questions about lice control.

Communicable Disease Prevention:

  • Take measures to prevent, suppress and control the spread of a reportable

    communicable disease.

  • Act as a consultant to students, staff, and parents for communicable disease control.

Health Education:

  • Communicable disease control
  • Bloodborne pathogens

  • Adolescent growth and development

  • Inservice to staff, students or parents on health issues
  • Community health resources
  • Cancer awareness and exams for breast, uterine and testicular cancers
  • Provide printed health information materials as available. (e.g., immunizations,

    "When to Keep Your Child Home" and "Common Communicable Diseases".

Immunizations:

  • Act as a resource person to staff, students and parents.
  • Offer immunizations to staff (ie. Tetanus, Hepatitis B., Flu, Pneumonia,

    TB skin test)
