County Health Department Offers Radon Test Kits The message is clear; RADON GAS IN YOUR HOME CAN CAUSE LUNG CANCER. The Ozaukee County Public Health Department encourages residents to protect their health by taking action to test their homes for radon gas. (See 2011 Ozaukee County radon results by municipality) Dan Ziegler, Environmental Health Specialist wants you to know that as winter approaches and you close up your house to keep out the cold, you may also be closing in harmful radon gas. Radon gas can enter your home through the basement or slab. Once inside your home if the windows are open, radon will be diluted by air and go out the windows. When the windows are closed, radon stays inside your house. It only takes 12 hours of having the windows closed for radon gas to reach its highest level in your home. The level of radon gas that enters your home is dependent on several factors. The main factor to remember is that radon comes from the ground your home is built on. The ground under your home may have radon levels that are low or high. However, the only way to know if radon is entering your home is to test the air in your home. You can purchase radon test kits at the Public Health Department for $6 each or for an extra $2 have a kit mailed to your home. The kits allow you to test your home and obtain test results.
