H.H. Peters Youth Camp - History

This camp was started in 1964, and is named for Herb Peters.  Herb served as the Ozaukee County Highway Commissioner for many years.  After his retirement, he took the part time job of Park Commissioner.  Herb died on September 17, 1982.

Herb Peters Youth Camp is located in Hawthorne Hills Park near the western shoreline of the Milwaukee River.  The camp is accessible from CTH 'I' by using the same entrance as Pioneer Village and Hawthorne Hills Park.

Camp facilities are available throughout the year.  Several scouting projects, over the last 20 years, have added several hiking trails and pavilions throughout the grounds.  A wooden map attached to the main building shows many of these features.   The trails provide access to the pavilions, picnic areas, and the Milwaukee River.  Firewood and grills are also available for cooking.  This Youth Camp has been an annual favorite for the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4H, etc.
