Accomplishments

The Ozaukee County Historical Society is a non profit organization with a proven record of accomplishments and programming. The Society has for over 45 years developed and maintained the Ozaukee County Pioneer Village, Saukville, and County Archived Records. Records are available at the Hazel Wirth Center, N57 W6406 Center St., Cedarburg. All researchers are invited to use these county records that are updated as materials are made available. Stony Hill School was acquired in 1977 making a one room school experience available to county area students.

The historic Interurban Depot, N 57 W6406 Center St., Cedarburg is now known as the Hazel Wirth Center. It was dedicated in the fall of 2007 and houses the Society office and Board Room, the Ozaukee Research Center (Archive), and a museum. Plans are underway to have the Research Center open more frequently but for now the hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays or by appointment. For information call 262-377-4510 or email Ruth Renz.  Additional funding is needed for purchase of an authentic rail car for display outside the Center and to complete interior furnishings.
In 1962, the Society acquired the Michael Ahner log house which became the nucleus of a growing collection of pioneer buildings, known as the Ozaukee County Pioneer Village. At present, there are over twenty buildings open to the public for individual tours, elementary school tours, group and organization sponsored activities, and special events.  Some of the special events include the annual Fiddler’s Contest, an Antique Power Reunion Tractor and Machinery Show, and Bluegrass at the Village, and the N.W.T.A Revolutionary War Encampment and Re-enactment!  Visitors step back into time as they visit this unique rural village nestled amidst the rolling Hawthorne Hills.
In 1977, the Society acquired Stony Hill School just a few miles north of Ozaukee County Pioneer Village.  Stony Hill School, located in the Town of Fredonia, the birthplace of National Flag Day, provides a one-room schoolhouse experience during elementary school field trips besides special ceremonies on National Flag Day held in June of each year. The avenue of States flags represent every State of the Union and are flown for that ceremony.  The grounds are open throughout the year as a tribute to "Old Glory and the Birthplace of National Flag Day" This site is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Also another project is the "Ozaukee County Courthouse Restoration Project"

These are all projects where you don’t just read about history…it comes to life in the buildings, the surroundings, the furnishings, and through the efforts of the interpretive guides.

The Society looks forward to the future and the opportunities that lie ahead, through working together and with your support we’ll move ahead preserving and sharing the past for today…And future generations!
