Lost in War
The original list enclosed in the cornerstone, which was opened in
2001, contained a listing of all the Ozaukee County veterans who had
served in the Civil War. Due to the large number of County residents who
served in the wars of the 20th century, it was not possible to
replicate this feat.
Attached is a listing of our county’s citizens who died in service to
the United States, during the 20th century. I have also tried
to provide a brief accounting of the wars of the 20th century.
Those enclosed represent the "large scale" conflicts. Our
service members are scattered all over the globe now, serving in various
"peace-keeping" missions.
At the time of this writing, we have nearly 8000 citizens who had
served in the US Military, out of a total county population of about
78,000. I hope that the next century will provide a period of peace, and
that those who are reading this in the next century, will be able to look
back at the 21st century, and not find any large-scale
conflicts in the history texts.
No one hates war more than the warrior, for he/she has seen the ugly
reality that is war.
I also hope that the readers of the next century are still living in
the "Land of the free, and the home of the Brave". God
Bless America.
